President of Mansoura University Rejects Freedom of Expression inside the University

Wednesday 15 October 2014, by The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI)

Cairo October 15, 2014

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), announces today it’s severe denunciation and condemn to the statements made by the president of Mansoura university “Mohamed al-Qenawy” on his rejection to the freedom of expression inside the university and demanding the police interference in the University.

His statements, documented by al-Masry al-Youm Newspaper, on last Monday in a video, clearly and expressly refuses the freedom of opinion inside the university on commenting the clashes included many Egyptian universities.

Although, that some students practices violence and ANHRI totally refuses and rejects it but resorting to the police solution by the president of the university and announces his rejection to the freedom of expression instead of demanding penalizing whoever violets the law and ensures the freedom of expression, clearly shows that the president of the university isn’t aware of the necessity and the importance of the freedom of expression, in particularly, inside the university and the importance related to adhere to it. This makes him unworthy of this post or he is a supporter of the police policies that will lead to more repression and the escalation of the crisis inside the universities; which makes him also not worthy of this post.

ANHRI said “in a society the respects law, the President of University should ensure the adherence to the rule of law and to punish whoever violates it or practice violence, alongside with respecting the freedom of expression which isn’t a grant from a government or a president of a university but a right to each citizen. Punishing all the students by rejecting the freedom of expression due to some of them violated the principle of peace, isn’t a justification for the president of university to issue hostile statements to the freedom of expression in an approach near to the political police.

ANHRI demands from the Egyptian president to dismiss Mansoura University President and to intervene to protect the freedom of expression, particularly, in the University and to entrench that solving the problems of the freedom of expression is more freedom of expression as it doesn’t contradict with the rule of law and to punish whoever exercise violence or breaches the concept of peaceful demonstrations.
