Morocco: Serious Setback for Press Freedom, ANHRI Condemns Trying the Journalist “Omar El-Mezain”

Tuesday 1 October 2013, by The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI)

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information, ANHRI, denounces the serious setback for the freedom of press in Morocco amid the ongoing attempts by the authorities to adopt the law and the criminal trials so as to prosecute the journalists and gag them against the backdrop of the articles they publish.

Omar El-Mezain, a reporter in the news site (http://www.goud.ma/), will appear before the Court of First Instance in Fes city withing the coming days over a new publication case, after the Public Prosecution accused him of insulting public employees in news published under his name and spreading false news insincerely. This is because of publishing news under the name of the journalist on the site Goud. After the investigations with the journalist, he was refereed to the trial after filing a complaint by “Mohamed Al-Hamoshi”, the judiciary police chief. The complaint charges the journalist with publishing false news that stir the citizens’ panic and undermine the staff of Directorate General for National Security.

This comes few days later after accusing the prominent Moroccan journalist “Ali Anzoula”, Head of the news website Lakome (http://www.lakome.com), of deliberately helping the perpetrators of terrorist crimes, providing the tools to carry out such crimes and praising the acts involving terrorist acts; this is after posting a video on the website about Al-Qadea in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

“All the information published by the journalist was transferred via some informed sources. The accusations and the investigations are about the sources of the information, which unveil that the authorities seek to glass over certain issues. Moreover, the prosecution of the journalist is a clear attack on the press freedom and an attempt to confiscate the right of information freedom”, said ANHRI.

ANHRI demands from the Moroccan authorities to stop those unfair trials against the journalists as well as to release the prominent journalist “Ali Anzoula” besides dropping all the charges against him. In addition, the authorities should stop the trial of the journalist “Omar El-Mezain”, who is being tried under the criminal law on account of publishing news.
