Egypt: Minister of Higher Education Bans Political and Partisan Activities inside Universities, Starting from Coming Academic Year

Wednesday 13 August 2014, by The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI)

Cairo: 13 August 2014

The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI) denounces the statement released yesterday by Dr. Al-Sayyed Abdel-Khaleq, Minister of Higher Education, to prevent any political agenda or partisan activity in the universities during the coming academic year.

Yesterday afternoon August 12, Minister of Higher Education stated, in the meeting of the Higher Council for Education and Students Affairs at the Supreme Council for Universities, that he will not allow the practice of any political or partisan activities inside the universities in the coming academic year. And he underscored the maintenance of universities’ security.

“Such a statement is a form of undermining the students’ political participation and a clear violation of the freedom of expression,” ANHRI says.

ANHRI calls on Dr. Al-Sayyed Abdel-Khaleq, Minister of Higher Education, to retreat from this statement and to allow the students to practice their right to participate in the political process, which is a right guaranteed to all people.
