“Cops are Dogs” Rapper Imprisoned

Thursday 5 December 2013, by Tunisia Live

Rapper Ala Yaacoubi, known by his stage name Weld el 15, turned himself in to a court in Hammamet today, where his 21-month prison sentence was reduced to four months.

Yaacoubi was sentenced in absentia this August after a performance deemed insulting to the police. He had been on the run since, but decided to appear today for his appeal hearing.

A team of lawyers including Bochra Bel Haj Hmida and Ghazi Mrabet defended him, and a number of supporters attended the hearing, including prominent members of the Tunisian rap community.

Following the announcement of the verdict, Yaakoubi was immediately ordered to jail and escorted by two officers.

Yaakoubi’s legal team said after the trial that they would file another appeal.

Yaakoubi’s original sentence included one year for assaulting an officer on duty, six months for slander, and three months for attacking public morals, Mrabet told Tunisia Live in August.

Fellow rapper Klay BBJ attended today’s hearing. He performed with Yaakoubi at the same concert in August, and also received a 21-month sentence. He turned himself in in late September, but was released after less than a month.
